While Peru inevitably evokes images of Machu Picchu and the Inca empire, the country is also riddled with archaeological sites which are a legacy of even more ancient times, when great civilizations bequeathed a legacy of their art, customs and rituals, their wisdom and skills.
The Inca empire was a recent arrival during the process of cultural development in the Andes during the pre-Hispanic era, and the history of the Incas barely accounts for a century within the 20,000 years of human occupation of Peruvian territory.
Much earlier than the Incas and while civilizations like the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese (3000 and 2000 B.C.) flourished, the city of Caral, located north of the city of Lima-Peru, was built; this was the first American expression of a Pre-Ceramic urban settlement with monumental architecture in an area greater than 10 hectares. Later, in the northern highlands, the Chavin (800 – 200 B.C.) achieved significant advances in architecture, engineering, and agriculture.
The Chavín civilization (1500-400 BC) achieved considerable prowess in architecture, engineering and agriculture in the northern highlands. Along the north coast, the Moche civilization (200 BC-700 AD) is famous for its realistic pottery (portraits carved into pots and gourds) and its pyramid-shaped temples. The same area was later controlled by the Chimú kingdom (900-1450 AD), who built Chan Chan, an immense mud-brick citadel featuring 12-meter-high walls and superb architectural work.
To the south, the Nazca people (200 BC-900 AD) etched an impressive series of figures etched into the desert floor known as the Nazca Lines, while graves belonging to the Paracas culture (800 BC-600 AD) have unearthed superb weavings which point to the magical and religious vision that governed the lives of this ancient civilization.
Centuries later, the Incas (1300-1500 AD) were to make Cusco the center of their empire, building major constructions such as Sacsayhuaman, Pisac and Koricancha. It is here that myth and history merge, where the Inca roads, the towns, people and traditions are a living example of the Andean spirit, sacred and monumental.

Piura (Piura region), Jun. 3. A delegation composed of chocolate 10 entrepreneurs from the United States and Canada, who are clients of renowned Valrhona enterprise, recently visited Peru's Northern Piura region with the purpose of tasting its cocoa.
Chocolate makers visited La Quemazon area, where they participated in harvesting, fermentation and drying process activities along with locals.
Businesspeople also visited Norandino Cooperative's laboratory located in the industrial zone.
"Visits such as these ones allow us to strengthen our ties with a greater number of chocolate makers and sell more cocoa. For instance, this privileged bond established between Norandino and Valrhona allows our organization’s producers to get more than double the price for cocoa than that received by a producer from Ivory Coast [Africa]," Cooperative Business Manager Santiago Paz indicated.
Valrhona
Among Norandino Cooperative's clients, Valrhona stands out. It produces the world's finest chocolate in the town of Tain L'Hermitage (France) since 1922.
The enterprise sells close to 12,000 tons of the product to 65 countries. Its raw material comes from 15 different origins, including Peru.
Valrhona's Illanka variety is made from cocoa harvested in Northern Peru’s La Quemazon, Barrios and Los Ranchos towns.
Client Ethiquable
Client Ethiquable Cooperative Enterprise also stands out. Guided by a wide fair trade philosophy, it contributes to supplying Northern Peruvian products: Coffee, cocoa and raw cane sugar to over 5,000 supermarkets in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Peru's coffee shines at SCAA Expo in U.S.
Lima, Jun. 3. June provides a varied tourism agenda in the country’s inland area, including the traditional religious observances of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and Andean ones like Inti Raymi, Chaccu Nacional de la Vicuña and Sondor Raymi, added to gastronomic festivals and impressive geographical landscapes.
Tourist activities start on June 3 with the Corpus Christi celebration in Cusco —a procession by 15 patron saints joined by musical groups and the attractive local gastronomy.
Chachapoyas tourist week offers recreational and cultural activities from June 3 to 10, including the Raymi Llaqta de los Chachapoya celebration (June 6-11), featuring dancers from different communities.
Sondor Raymi
On June 19 in Apurimac over 800 actors will perform the origin and expansion of the Chanka civilization with a ritual on Pacucha Lake, from where Usquwillca emerged to conquer neighboring peoples.
The regional tourist week in Moyobamba (San martin) will take place on June 20-30. It will be filled with tradition-related competitions, parades, gastronomic fests, procession and sporting events.
Chaccu Nacional de la Vicuña
The Pampas Galeras in Ayacucho will host the 23rd Chaccu Nacional de la Vicuña (an annual roundup of Vicunas), where vicunas are sheared and then released. The chaccu is followed by a marriage of young vicunas and an Incan ancient ceremony to thank the Pachamama or mother earth.
Inti Raymi
Cusco’s most important festivity, the Inti Raymi (Sun Festival) is held on June 24. This huge event, held once a year at the Sacsayhuaman fortress, includes an impressive show performed by hundreds of actors.
Saint Peter and Saint Paul
Taking place in Ilo, Moquegua, the observance honors the two saints from June 27 to 29. It is one of the city’s biggest traditions and attendees can enjoy boat rides and folkloric parades while in there.
Piura and Tumbes will join the celebrations with masses, processions, dances and food fairs.
On June 29, Arequipa’s Mariscal Caceres district (Known as San Jose) will celebrate masses and processions leading to Camana River in honor of St. Peter “the Fisherman.”
Peru: Over 1.8 million tourists to visit natural protected areas in 2016
Lima, Jun. 2. Peru's well-preserved natural protected areas have enabled the country to exceed expectations on sustainable tourism, the State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) announced.
At the beginning of the year, 2016's goal stood at 600,000 visitors. Following considerations, the figure was increased to 1,800,000.
In this sense, Sernanp Head Pedro Gamboa affirmed that tourism growth "is due to" the strategy implemented nationwide.
It "is the result of proper conservation management and basic, as well as infrastructure services enhancement witnessed across the areas."
The measure has been recognized by entrepreneurs and thus generated confidence among them to "make new investments in the country."
